At St. Paul’s Lutheran School, we believe education is about much more than academics. Every lesson, every conversation, every chapel service, every recess, and every interaction is an opportunity for God to work through His people.

As Christians, we are reminded that God calls each of us into unique vocations. Whether you are a parent, teacher, pastor, office staff member, volunteer, or student, God uses ordinary moments to accomplish extraordinary things for His kingdom.

Sometimes we recognize those moments right away. More often, we don’t realize their significance until years later.

A Conversation on a Bridge

Principal Jill George recently reflected on one of those moments that continues to remind her why Christian education matters.

Several years ago she was walking to the public library when she heard a group of middle school boys gathered on a bridge where local kids often jump into the water for fun.

Her first thought was, “I really don’t want to deal with kids today.”

But before she could take another route, the boys spotted her and called her over.

One young man approached and asked if she thought he should jump off the bridge.

Jill told him she didn’t think it was a good idea. But if he was determined to do it, he should at least make sure the water was deep enough first. They talked for just a few minutes before she continued on to the library.

To Jill, it was simply a brief conversation with a young person who seemed to need an adult’s attention. She had no idea that God was already writing a much bigger story.

God Was Already Working

A couple of weeks later, the boy’s mother visited St. Paul’s for a school tour and told Jill something she never expected to hear.

Her son had met Jill at the park and now wanted to attend St. Paul’s.

Jill remembers responding in disbelief.

“I just stopped to talk to him because it seemed like he wanted an adult to pay attention to him for a few minutes.”

His mother replied,

“That is exactly what he wanted.”

That one conversation became the beginning of a relationship that would shape the next several years of this young man’s life.

At St. Paul’s, he found teachers who cared about him, classmates who walked alongside him, pastors who shared God’s Word, and a school family committed to pointing him toward Christ.

Seven Years Later

Fast forward seven years.

That young man graduated from St. Paul’s, completed Marine Corps Boot Camp, and is now serving our country as a Marine stationed in Okinawa, Japan.

When he came home on leave, one of the people he wanted to visit was Principal George.

His mother later sent Jill a heartfelt letter explaining why.

“When my son was home on leave from the Marine Corps, it was important to him to visit the people who made a difference in his life. You are one of those people. The years that he spent at St. Paul’s were some of the best of his young life. He told me that many times. You gave him a strong foundation, and I am very grateful.”

She reflected on the story that began years earlier with a conversation on a bridge and wrote:

“It was a reminder that God brought us all together for a reason.”

It Takes an Entire Community

What makes this story so special isn’t simply that a teacher influenced a student.

It’s that God worked through an entire community.

He worked through a mother who recognized what her son needed and trusted a Christian school to partner with her family.

He worked through teachers who invested in a child every day, often without knowing the lasting impact they were making.

He worked through pastors and staff who faithfully shared God’s Word.

He worked through classmates who became friends and encouraged one another.

And He worked through one brief conversation that seemed insignificant at the time.

As Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”

Looking back, it is easy to see God’s fingerprints throughout this Marine’s journey.

Looking ahead, we know He is continuing to write stories like his every single day within the halls of St. Paul’s Lutheran School.

We may never fully know the impact of a kind word, a faithful teacher, a praying parent, or a Christ-centered education.

But we know the One who does.

And for that, we simply say:

Praise be to God.
