Jesus is talking to His disciples about the suffering He is about to endure for them (Mk 10.32-34), and then two of His “inner circle” reveal how enslaved they are to their pride by busily attempting to manipulate the future for their benefit. (Mk 10.35-37). We are prideful by nature. Many of us only need take a quick look at our social media or what we focus upon in the coffee shop to see that truth. We need the “new covenant” that Jeremiah prophesied (Jer 31.31-34). We, in our weakness and slavery to self, need not a temporal salvation, but an eternal one (Heb 5.9). Thanks be to God, Jesus fulfilled the old covenant and–grace upon grace–makes us participants in the new covenant of love.
