In Greek mythology Narcissus saw his reflection in the water and fell in love with it. Although he did not realize in the beginning that it was just a reflection, when he understood it, he fell in despair that his love could not materialize. We all have an inner Narcissus, and The LORD calls us to see our vanity for what it is: death (Eph 2.1-10). He calls us out of “over-exposure” to self and to look outside ourselves for life and salvation. As he did with our forefathers in the desert (Nu 21.4-9), the LORD calls us to believe his Word and look up to the One lifted up (Jn 3.14-21)–Christ–whose self-giving at the cross is the epitome of love.
