Joseph didn’t believe Mary. He had his mind made up that what she told him about the angel and the Child could not be true. Nevertheless, Joseph was a gracious man, and he did not want to see Mary or the Child perish. He wanted to give them an opportunity. Then, The LORD gave Joseph another opportunity by telling him that what Mary said was true, that Mary, the virgin, would “conceive and bear a son,” (Isa 7.14) that this Child, conceived by the Holy Spirit and yet “descended from David according to the flesh,” (Rom 1.3-4) was the Promised One sent to “save his people from their sins.” (Mt 1.21) Joseph received this opportunity in faith and immediately “did as the angel of the Lord commanded him” (Matt. 1:24). Joseph gave Mary and the Child a home and named the Child “Jesus,” which means “The LORD saves.” This what God does with all of us, for God “desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” (1 Timothy 2:4, ESV).
